Hot off the Press 11

For any print fans that haven't been already, this years Hot off the Press should be scribbled onto your "things to do list" immediately. Associate Director Natalie Suggitt has chosen the very best work from last years MA graduate shows,making this one of Curwen's most contemporary exhibitions.Anyone concerned about the state of printmaking in England today will be firmly reassured by the quality and diversity of this years graduates.Also, as with all our graduate shows, a great opportunity to buy the work of promising new artists before they become too expensive!

This year we had an immensley positive private view.
It was extremely busy, with many familiar faces from
the world of printmaking in attendance.

Recieving a lot of attention at the private view was the work of Dolores De Sade, a graduate from the Royal College of Art.Rich with irony and a thoughtful playfulness, De Sade's puts disparate elements together to form surreal environments.These scenes make strange an irreverant comments. What these comments actually refer to is a mystery but one assumes the answers lie deep within tomes of contemporary art theory. That is not to say this work is academic or elitist however. As I write a visitor to the gallery is happily chuckling away to "It Was the Best of Times, It was the Worst of Times" where a lonely shed is depicted listing the great spread of curries which now make up a staple of the English diet.

Dolores De Sade
It Was The Best of Times, It Was the Worst of Times, £495 fr

Continuing the strain of surreal imagery Eric Storey, a graduate from Camberwell College of Art, has collaged together images from popular culture to make sinister assemblages.His "Forensics in Fairyland" series seem to address the unconscious mind, using the imagery of nightmares to create narratives and scenarios that unnerve and disorientate.One of the most psychologically arresting of the series is No.4, where a potentially infirm girl clutches a ghost dog while being stalked by a pantomime Cricket man.The full series seem to give a map of the many characters which haunt Storey's personal "other world", with the suggestion that all conspire together to eventually undo him.

As a whole Hot off The Press can be viewed as an accurate cross section of current movements in contemporary printmaking.At the same time the exhibition also feels like a cohesive whole, with the different artists sharing many similar attitudes to technique, pallet and content. If you haven't been already, you have until 28th January to catch this remarkable exhibition.

The Print Master: Stanley Jones Speaking on Radio 4 on Tuesday 17th Jan 11:30

Legendary print maker and good friend of the gallery: Stanley Jones will be the focus of a documentary on Radio 4 next week.The program, which examines Stanley's career as the Master Lithographer at Curwen Studio, will be broadcast on Tuesday morning at 11.30.Anyone with even a passing interest in print making should definitely add this program to their diary immediately. It promises to be a fascinating examination of one of the most respected living print makers in the world today.

The program was recorded recently at the Curwen Studio amongst the thundering and clanking machinery of the print works.It attempts to explore Stanley's many experiences with some of the greatest print makers of the 20 Century.The recording also looks at the current artist in residence at the Curwen Studio, Susan Aldworth.Susan assumes the role of Stanley's apprentice in the show, learning his skills and listening to his many anecdotes.

For any of those not familiar with Stanley Jones' story ( also told by his wonderful book 'Stanley Jones and the Curwen Studio' available at the gallery) Stanley has been the Master Lithographer for over 50 years at the Curwen Studio. In the 50s he spearheaded a rapid expansion in British Printmaking and today he is revered in artistic circles as one of the greatest print makers alive. Now in his 70's Stanley Jones's clients read like a roll call of the 20th century's great British artists, including Henry Moore, Barbara Hepworth and David Hockney amongst many others.

Today lithography is "under threat" as increasing numbers of Art schools have disposed of their lithography presses and there are few technicians who fully understand the process. This is a unique chance to work with the world expert in this discipline, and for the listener to discover more about this art.

Pierre Julien in Metro

Have a look at this brilliant article on oner of our artists, Pierre Julien, in todays Metro newspaper,page 3.

It's full of some rather interesting puns, some stretching the English language to capacity.

"He rolls the pioneering popular free paper into 3,000 matchstick-sized tubes, glues them and covers them in varnish.
‘Each animal takes about a month to build,’ he said. ‘When you are working on such a minute scale you have to be extremely patient, making sure each tube is placed correctly.’
‘Each year more and more animals are added to the endangered list and unless we do something to stop it, we will lose some of our most treasured species included the polar bear, tiger, elephant, gorilla, giraffe and black bears.
‘It’s almost unimaginable that we have allowed these great animals to get to the brink of extinction,’ added Mr Julien from London.
The menagerie, named Endangered Species, is at the Curwen Gallery in Fitzrovia, west London until Friday. There’s only one thing missing, a paper tiger."

The Christmas Show

Our Christmas show has now been running for two weeks and we are pleased to say it has been very successful.The Christmas show is an extremely important exhibition for us. Our selections for this show try to reflect the gallery as a whole.Much of the work currently on our walls is the work of artists that we have been showing for many years, making this a good exhibition to reflect on the history of the gallery, as well as its future.

Susie Perring Into the Sun

This year we have attempted to include all of our gallery artists as well as trying out a few new additions to the usual core choices . Every artist we will be showing next year is represented in this show, with artists such as Susie Perring (showing in the Rectory Gallery next March- May) and Brendan Hansbro (showing at Curwen in April 2012) causing quite a stir. Lee Sellers also, who will be showing at Curwen next December, has been extremely popular, selling the five paintings we initially hung in one go! Other works such as Keith Roberts At Swim will be familiar to many and much loved by everyone here.

Pierre Julien, Gorrilla, £450

The Christmas show is also a great platform for us to look to the future and to try new artists. This year we have been delighted to show Pierre Julien’s Endangered Species series of sculptures. They are made in a very original fashion- from hundreds of rolled up bits of newspaper. Pierre has very kindly given us a brilliant collection of these animals which will also be showing next year in the Rectory Gallery, during the “Menagerie at the Rectory” exhibition running from January- March 2012.Look out for a short article in Metro newspaper on Pierre, hopefully printed at some point this week.

Macmillan Cancer Support Weekend, 26th/27th November

The Macmillan Support Weekend is a charitable iniative we have been running for over 30 years.The weekend is a fund raising art exhibition which runs for two days only (this coming weekend 26/27 November). Of every sale 10% of the artwork's price is donated to Macmillan Cancer Support.The show is open from 11am-9pm on the Saturday and 11am-6pm on Sunday.

Hannah Battershell, Crocodilian, £375

Originally started in 1977 at her own home by the gallery director, Jill Hutchings, the exhibition

has been running every year since.Jills particular connection with Macmillan Cancer Support
comes from her backround in nursing in the oncology wing at the Middlesex Hospital, where she nursed cancer patients specifically.

Every year the exhibition raises money, as well as awareness, for the charity.It is also a great opportunity to see a more eclectic mix of artwork than is usually shown by the gallery.Some of our staple artists are represented in the show. Henry Walsh a much loved and long serving Curwen Gallery artist will be showing Insouciant (below), one of our favourite of his paintings.

Two very new artists, both showing at Curwen Gallery for the first time during the Macmillan Support Weekend, are Robin Spalding and Hannah Battershell.Both have an unexplained fascination with Crocodiles! Hannah Battershell's dreamlike and uncanny paintings are both unsettling and at the same time rather adorable.Robin Spalding's Golden Crocodile could be said to occupy similar conceptual ground, its toothless smile making it as cute as it is threatening.

Alison Neville is probably the most well travelled artist we have ever met.Her career spanning show at Curwen Gallery is a document of the many exotic places which she has travelled to and been inspired by.

Alison Neville is an adept printmaker with a distinctive, characterful style.This show
builds upon a solid grounding of work from her early career (Westminster Abbey, Poets Corner was shown in Curwen Gallery's first show 30 years ago) and charts both a lifetime of work and of travel.

For me, the most significant factor in this body of work is that Alison is exceptionally accurate when capturing a sense of place.There is a feeling that Alison has absorbed so much from each place and then managed to transcibe this experience into a single image. Each etching is like a distillation of the essence of the subject location.For the places I know, I get a genuine feeling of nostalgia, for the many places I have never been I feel that I must go at once!From conversations with the other visitors to the show, I think these sensations are a surprisingly common reaction to this work.

Her most recent works document a trip down the Congo River.Last Tuesday evening (15th Nov.) Alison delivered a fascinating talk on this rare experience.From this trip she has created a series of delicately produced  etchings of the "Little Houses" she encountered while travelling down the Congo.The remarkable character of these makeshift buildings are what Alison has most faithfully reproduced. One gets the feeling that there are a wealth of different stories which live in the fabric of these little houses.Also, when the whole series hang together, there is a real sense of the narrative of Alisons own journey and the many stories which she could tell of this much mythologised river.

The London Suite

The London Suite are a set of 10 lithographs published by Advanced Graphics London in 1982. 10 well known artists were invited to each make one print to illustrate to the world that printmaking didn't have to be flat.They are a very vibrant set of screenprints, all with a unique character and the hallmarks of their artist.The suite is a rare and very collectible set of prints with some of this centuries best loved artists contributing.

Northen Graduates Artist Wins Northern Lights Art Prize

One our Northern Graduates Artists, Nat Quinn, has just won a £10 000 prize and professional mentoring from established artist Emerson Mayes.

Here is what the judges had to say about his work:

Rebecca Hind: Causeway

Rebecca Hind's new show; Causeway opened last thursday.It is a very serene exhibition of large watercolour paintings exploring different elements.

These paintings form a metaphorical step across a causeway into a realm of the basic manifestations of the elemental forces: Air, Fire and Water. Walking through the gallery becomes a journey though metaphysical energies, leading us to align with the rise, fall and shift of the elements.

One thing that immediately strikes the viewer is the amount of movement in these images. These are not passive elements; they are living, dynamic forces. They are animated images, living states of ethereal flux, celebrating the power of the elements. In her paintings of water; waves pulse and flex like muscles, in her vivid depictions of fire, sparks of definition crackle over the soft flames whooshing beneath.

One of the newest and most impressive of the paintings on show is her depiction of air: Glitterbirds. Here the sky is represented as a fluid space by the movements of flocks of birds within it. These birds swarm and drift, moving as one body, framed by soft clouds in a sky composed of diffuse beams of light. Similarly, in her representations of water; white spume on the crest of waves ripple and undulate over the calmer washes of colour beneath. This gives visible contours to the movement of the transparent body.

Her use of watercolour is ideally suited to the ethereal nature of this subject matter. With the transparency and flow of the medium comes the suggestion of the transparency and flow of the element represented. Despite, in some cases, being figurative, these images are also enormously expressive. They manage to take on an abstract quality which is as important as their, more obvious, figurative nature.

In this exhibition, Curwen and New Academy Gallery gives a chance to see a new and original practitioner within the tradition of watercolour painting. Her work is attractive and uplifting as well as being academically interesting. The work illustrates the potential of watercolour painting to explore ambitious themes while also being appropriate for domestic spaces. These works fit well in both the gallery and the home, giving equal delight to the casual browser and the determined collector.

Victoria Langdon: Home To Roost

Last week Victoria Langdon's new exhibition "Home to Roost" opened to a packed upstairs gallery.This new show of bold and colourful screenprints are some of the most good humored work we have shown in a long while.

The subject of the work is the 'country gent' of the bird world; the pheasant.In contrast to the urban pigeons, the subject of her last show, pheasants have associations with rural gentry. Her prints capture the comical quirkiness of the bird, many of them playfully adopting human expressions
.

As can be seen above; Regal Ridiculous bears an uncanny resemblance to Hugh Laurie's Prince Regent from Blackadder the Third.

Curwen Gallery welcomes artist Pierre Julien

Yesterday morning we were joined in the gallery by a very interesting new artist, Pierre Julien.
He very kindly showed us a selection of his new work (pictured above and below) which we will be showing, as a group, in our Christmas Show .As you may be able to see from the image above the animals are made from many hundreds of rolled up slices of newspaper (Metro!) , glued together to make a solid form.

These works, as well as many others, will be shown in the gallery from 1-23rd December for the Christmas Show.Private view on 30th November .

Northern Graduates Opening

Our Northern Graduates '11 show opened last night and was an exciting event for all involved.
The show aims to represent the most interesting work from this years Fine Art BA graduates from the North of England. Henry Walsh,who worked for Curwen Gallery for 11 years, curated the show, choosing graduate work from the student shows of most of the major northern universities.

The private view was very well attended and we managed to sell a fair few works from a number of the fortunate graduates. It was great to meet many of the graduates and talk to them about their inspirations and future plans, as well as introduce them to our friends and clients.

We currently have two exhibitions showing at the gallery.Downstairs we have a large retrospective solo show of Albany Wiseman and in the upstairs space, a smaller group show from Derek, Lawrence and Gerald Mynott.

Albany Wiseman, showing downstairs, has a remarkable selection of work from his many years as a practising artist.Albany works from life in oil, print and watercolour taking inspiration from towns and countrysides in which he has lived ; England, Portugal, Ireland and France.

The Mynotts are a family of lithographic printers;the father Derek and two brothers,Lawrence and Gerald.The prints show two generations of quite similar working habits, focusing on figurative scenes from the artist's extensive travels.Stylistically all three relatives are quite close to each other with Derek and Gerald making carefully observed scenes of parks, gardens and landmarks and Lawrence producing slightly poppier still lifes.

Glynn Boyd Harte Final Week

Our Glynn Boyd Harte show is now in its last week and we are pleased to say has sold very well indeed! There are still a few great pictures left which are really deserving of a good home.

One of our favourites, Asparagus, the only remaining picture from Glynn's last ever show in 2003, is still available much to our surprise. This a large, delicately arranged watercolour composition of asparagus and strawberries; some of Glynn's favourite subject matters in his last years. It is one of our more expensive pieces however it is without doubt one of the strongest in the exhibition.
Also remaining is the archive copy of Sardines II, the last copy of the very popular print of some rather exotic sardine tins and Dogana a lovely watercolour and pastel of Venice.

For those familiar with the area of Fitzrovia, we still have a few prints of Pollock’s Toy Museum and James Smith and Sons umbrella shop. Any of our visitors to the Rectory Gallery will recognise Glynn’s stunning coloured pencil and pastel representation of Christchurch, Spitalfields, also still unsold.

The exhibition combines many old favourites as well as a number of new treasures from the personal collection of Glynn’s widow; Carrie Boyd Harte. If you haven’t seen this most uplifting show already make sure you schedule in a visit before next Wednesday, 25^th May. It could well be the last chance to see such an extensive collection of the work of this much celebrated draughtsman.

Living and working near the Dorset coastline Nicola Lord is spoilt for inspiration. Her mixed media paintings display a strong use of colour and playful compositions that balance between landscape and abstraction.

“I convey what I see and feel with paint and brush, exploring horizon lines and experimenting with elements such as boats and small buildings depicted as shapes on the landscape. Each painting evolves with time and seasonal change which dictates my palette from soft muted tones to hot hazy colours. I will never tire of such a diverse subject as it is a constant inspiration”.

This exhibition brings together the work of two artists working in glass, Nikki Cass & Rodney Bender and a painter, Michael Lynch.

NIKKI CASS

Nikki Cass' glasswork draws inspiration from natural and urban landscapes. Bold abstract colours, expressive paint marks and related forms are built up like layers of time. Her work incorporates painting, casting, slumping and fusing techniques. The most recent work has also brought spaces, fragments, circles and rough and smooth edges to the glass. A new series of “Talking Heads” explore portraits and foliate heads.

Nikki has been working with glass for 24 years. She has worked on large and small scale commissions for public, private and corporate clients. Nikki has work in collections in Britain, Australia, Sweden, France and the U.S.A.

RODNEY BENDER

Rodney Bender has worked in glass for the past 35 years, first in Australia and since 1978

in the UK. He has worked in Industry in the UK and studied at the Welsh School of

You are invited to the opening reception on Architectural Glass, now part of Swansea Metropolitan University. He taught for many years and and became Head of School at Swansea. In 2001 he set up IGP Ltd a glass design and manufacturing business that has worked with an eclectic mix of artists, designers, architects and engineers.

He currently divides his time as Research Fellow at Swansea Metropolitan University, managing IGP and pursuing his own practice as a maker. After many years working primarily with windows and screens his work has recently incorporated three-dimensional designs.

MICHAEL LYNCH

Lynch first sprays stencils and templates onto a support, then overlays additional drawn shapes, juxtaposing multi-layered areas with quieter spaces. He rarely has a fixed idea about the outcome. A painting works for him when the drawn and sprayed forms interact in ways which, although abstract, evoke aspects of our environment that we may recognise without being sure exactly what they are, or where we have seen them before.

Making Art Work
Artist Sinéid Codd, in conversation with Mary-Alice Stack, Arts Council England, former Director of Paintings in Hospitals

The discussion will focus on some of the functions of art and art making for an artist working within both private and public spheres - particularly the arts in health sector.

Sinéid Codd is an artist with extensive experience in developing participatory arts projects. Since 1997 she has been working in the arts and health sector on a series of commissions for institutions such as The Royal London Hospital, Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Trust, Avon and Wiltshire Mental Health Trust and the Great Western Hospital. She co-ordinated the ARTBRIDGE artist in residency program with Paintings in Hospitals (1999 - 2001). In April 2009, her work was featured on a BBC Arts in Health slide show (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8014719.stm)

Sinéid's personal work explores relationship, loss and memory through colour and natural form. She has exhibited with the Whitechapel Gallery and the Royal Academy and has work held in private, public and corporate collections.

Sinéid’s latest solo exhibition 'underneath and in-between' continues at Curwen & New Academy until 21 November.

The work of David Rhys Jones is based on journeys he has made, in the case of this exhibition, the area of Spitalfields has been explored. The imagery collected whilst making the journeys forms a documentation of the landscape and architecture, social cultures and activity within the space. The viewer’s attention is brought to focus upon a selection of intriguing details of the surroundings, which together build a sense of narrative of this journey.

The collected imagery is transferred onto a variety of mediums, most often ceramic blocks, but also onto silk and some work on paper.

David Rhys Jones studied at Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design and has exhibited widely including the V&A Museum, The Royal Academy and the Courtauld Institute of Art.

KEN BLACKBURN: NEW WORK

Over the years that I have been making these paintings, I have from time to time attempted to verbalise the reasons and motivations behind their production.
Initially, I would say that my paintings were reproductions of existing images of derelict industrial walls, which appeared abstract but were in fact representational.
On the other hand, I found that much of the time I couldn’t resist the urge to let each painting develop in its own individual and natural way and before long found that I was working in a much more process- based way. As such it’s hard to say if my work is processed or idea’s based. Making historical or contemporary references to other artists or ideologies whilst re-assuring, is not particularly helpful.
The reality in the studio is all about decisions and the desire to make something unique and impossible to duplicate.

Following its hugely successful debut last year, Buy Art Fair has announced its return for 2009 with a three-day weekend event from the 24th to 27th September at Urbis.

NORTHERN GRADUATES '09: 06-26 AUG

Curwen & New Academy Gallery’s 22^nd annual Northern Graduates exhibition provides a showcase for the best of this year’s graduates from the North of England. These select few are all artists who have stood out amongst the hundreds of graduates all completing their degrees this summer and show the most promise for becoming successes of the art world in years to come. The work in the exhibition covers various mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture and installation and also a great variety of styles and methods.

Some of the work in this exhibition is intentionally thought provoking. Other works are more light hearted and intend more to make one smile. Some works require participation and others shout out their message. Nazmin Abdullah is one of the latter with her wonderfully produced paintings of cultural identity, and the same can be said of Shona Rannachan’s darkly comedic cartoons of the British Armed Forces. In contrast to this are the subtle landscapes by Vicky Mykytiuk, reminiscent of faded drawings from the Far East or Vicky Tomkinson’s genteel illustrations of urban life.

Kyle Saxton’s ‘light graffiti’ shows a different aspect of the urban setting. The dominating essence of graffiti is its temporary nature, Kyle’s graffiti is gone at the speed of light and never seen as a whole by the naked eye, but he captures it to glorious effect via long exposure photography and film.

Chris Porter’s work is only fully appreciated through participation. He has used found bits of old technology, such as TV screens, sound systems & computers, and subverted their original use until they become objects of the sublime. James Daltry is another artist forcing one to interact with everyday technology in an unfamiliar way with his unsettling series of child mannequins. Also reflecting on the fast pace communication of our technological age is Katie Bartley. She creates a wonderful irony by using the patient art of paper cutting to represent images of her web profiles and camera lenses.

On the other side of a lens is Jonathan Lynch producing haunting photographs of desolate interiors, empty of all but the sense of their past. Jenny Gilberg’s work begins with a photograph of an every day item such as a dirty sink, but by the time her work is complete, the image has been elaborated until one is left intrigued as to where the photograph ends and the painting begins.

Also shifting focus on the seemingly banal are the blurred abstractions by Tommy Stables. Some other artists that stood out this year for their playful use of paint include Katherine Holden with her oil resist abstractions and the tactile multi layered blocks of Tara Roberts. Last year’s trend of a renewed appreciation for traditional etching, continues this year through Larissa Greenwoods etchings on old copper circuit boards.

This year’s geographical remit has stretched slightly to include Loughborough and so allows us to include Benjamin Cohen’s incredible paintings.

Northern Graduates ’09 will be split across two separate venues. The main show will be at Curwen & New Academy Gallery, in Windmill Street, W1 from 6-26^th August. The second part of the show opens a week later at the new exhibition space in Spitalfields, The Rectory Gallery, E1. This gallery space is set in the Rectory of Spitalfields Church, and is a beautifully maintained Georgian House. The private view at the Rectory Gallery is on Tuesday 11^th August, 6-8pm and a second private view on Sunday 16^th August, 2-4pm. The exhibition is open by appointment only outside of these times.

THE DIRECTORS: JOHN & JILL HUTCHINGS

John was born on the 6^th November, 1928, in Surbiton, Surrey. After school and 2 years serving in the Royal Artillery, John went to St Peters College in Oxford to study Philosophy, Politics & Economics. Following his education John trained as an accountant in London.

Jill was born on the 8^th June 1937, in Cardiff, Wales. She trained as a nurse at the Middlesex Hospital, London. In 1957, Jill met John on a train in Spain. They were subsequently married in 1959. They are proud parents to 3 daughters and have 10 grandchildren.

During the 60’s, John joined the Curwen Press as a financial adviser, later becoming the Chairman. At that time the Curwen Press included Curwen Gallery and Print Studio. By the early 80’s the Curwen Press was being taken over by a larger company and foreseeing the closure of the gallery and print studio, John and Jill purchased both companies.

In 1978 Stephen Reiss, also of Curwen, together with John made a proposal to Sir Hugh Casson, then president of the Royal Academy, to form a new company to concentrate on providing art for business. The company was formed on a 50/50 basis by the RA and Curwen, and was to be housed in the Upstairs Gallery at the RA with John as Managing Director. It was in fact the first business art consultancy in London.

During 1987, when the Sackler Galleries were being built in the Royal Academy, Business Art Galleries became an independent company and relocated to No.34 Windmill Street, establishing the New Academy Gallery as its permanent home. This move brought BAG into the same street as the Curwen Gallery, aiding the working relationship between the companies. Jill had been combining her career in nursing with her interests in the Curwen & BAG for many years, but in 1987, she left nursing to work full time as a director for the company.

At the beginning of 2005 the Curwen Gallery, Business Art Galleries and the New Academy Gallery were all brought under one roof at No.34. To celebrate this episode in the company’s story, and to incorporate the history behind both companies, the gallery was renamed Curwen & New Academy. As further reference to this union a new logo was designed by Brendan Hansbro. Inspired by an original Curwen Unicorn print by Eric Gill, the two rearing unicorns symbolise the joining together of the two establishments.

Originally this exhibition was arranged to celebrate the 50 years of Jill & John’s marriage but sadly, shortly after making the final selection for this exhibition, John Hutchings died on 3^rd February 2009.

John was a wonderful man and he will be greatly missed. Jill remains as the company Director, maintaining that the gallery and this exhibition stand as a celebration of John’s life.

The Rectory Gallery is a new gallery space set in the Rectory of Christ Church in Spitalfields.

This first exhibition showcases lithographic prints made at the Curwen Studio. Following its 50^th Anniversary last year, this exhibition highlights the quality and diversity of work produced by Curwen over the years. Prints by Glynn Boyd Harte, Prunella Clough and Stanley Jones and John Piper represent the earlier years at the Studio.

Younger artists such as Thomas Martin, Colin Wilkin and Mark Hearld show that the art of printmaking continues to strive forward to this day. Hearld’s ‘Printing with Spirit’ was made specially to mark the anniversary and references the studio’s beginnings as part of the Curwen Press. Another step in Curwen’s long history sees its lithographs, both old and new, come to this exciting new gallery space in London’s East End.

An Artist’s Journey in Iceland

The paintings shown in Fara og Koma 2 are based on two months spent working at Laxnes horse farm in late winter last year. Some are personal records, diaries with topographical maps showing the farm and surrounding areas with the riding tracks, and fragments of life on the farm; individual horses, family members, the farm vehicles, views from the farm. The larger paintings embody a bigger and more general sense of Iceland, a volcanic island always on the edge. SR09

Curwen & New Academy first discovered Stuart’s work in 2005 as he graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University. He went on to The Slade School of Art and is now living and working in London. Stuart has exhibited widely in the UK and he has work in many private and public collections.

Katharine Holmes has painted the landscape around the areas around Malham, them moors and the landscapes of the border counties. Some are also created in Scotland. All of the works are created on site and they sometimes contain elements of the landscape (grasses gravel etc.) within the very fabric of the paint.
